Description
Franz Liszt, a dedicated admirer of Schubert, frequently included transcriptions of Schubert's songs in his piano performances. Initially, he featured Stephen Heller's arrangement of the "Trout" in his repertoire, but during the summer of 1844, he seized the opportunity to create his own version. This arrangement was soon published as part of "6 Mélodies célèbres." In true Schubertian fashion, who left multiple iterations of his "Trout," Liszt later produced another arrangement. Consequently, we now recognize two distinct versions: the first from 1844, characterized by its challenging passages, and a second, published in Vienna and Paris in 1846, which, while still virtuosic, is somewhat more accessible. The Henle Urtext edition, featuring fingerings by Evgeny Kissin, includes both versions and draws from a personal copy annotated by Liszt himself, providing pianists with a delightful choice.
