Description

Franz Liszt arranged numerous works by other composers, particularly excerpts from the operas of his friend and son-in-law Richard Wagner, for his instrument. He turned to Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman" twice, creating a brilliant piano transcription not only of Senta's ballad but also of the spinning chorus ("Summ und brumm, du gutes Rädchen") from Act 2. Liszt's "Spinning Song" transcription, brimming with virtuosic brilliance, has remained one of his most beloved works to this day.

In preparing the Urtext edition, we were able to consult the autograph score held in Weimar as well as the composer's own revisions in the archives of the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel.
