Robert Schumann’s Violoncello Concerto Op. 129 is considered the first significant concerto in the repertoire for this instrument. It is therefore rather unexpected that this work faced a highly problematic reception history initially. Schumann composed the score in 1850 while in Düsseldorf, yet there was no specific event or soloist for its world premiere. Following its release, additional years passed before the global premiere. It was not until the close of the 19th century that Schumann’s Cello Concerto truly established itself as a staple in the repertoire.
