Bach: 3 Sonatas, BWV 1027-1029 (Viola/Piano)

Author : Johann Sebastian Bach

Description

Johann Sebastian Bach's three sonatas for violin da gamba and harpsichord obbligato, BWV 1027–1029, which are edited here, were passed down to us solely as distinct pieces. One version features viola da gamba, while the other version features viola. The three pieces—such as the six sonatas for violin and harpsichord BWV 1014–1019—should not be viewed as a single piece, according to either source material or style. It is possible, if not proven, that none of the three sonatas were composed with this instrumentation in mind. This transcription had no effect on the sonatas' musical content or, consequently, their artistic standing.

Bach: Gottes Zeit ist die allesbeste Zeit (Actus tragicus)

Author : Johann Sebastian Bach

Description

Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit (Mighty God, His time is ever best) BWV 106, known as Actus tragicus, is a cantata intended for funeral services. Due to the absence of original records regarding its first performance, determining the exact year of its creation remains elusive. However, the notable similarities to BWV 131 Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu Dir, likely composed in 1707, and BWV 71 Gott ist mein König from 1708, both of which were written in Mühlhausen, imply that this funeral cantata may have also been composed in Mühlhausen around 1707.
