Description
Johann Sebastian Bach's three sonatas for violin da gamba and harpsichord obbligato, BWV 1027–1029, which are edited here, were passed down to us solely as distinct pieces. One version features viola da gamba, while the other version features viola. The three pieces—such as the six sonatas for violin and harpsichord BWV 1014–1019—should not be viewed as a single piece, according to either source material or style. It is possible, if not proven, that none of the three sonatas were composed with this instrumentation in mind. This transcription had no effect on the sonatas' musical content or, consequently, their artistic standing.
-The New Bach Edition's context
includes a Viola optional portion as well.
