Description

Schubert's "Ständchen" (Serenade), based on Rellstab's poem "Leise flehen meine Lieder" (Gently My Songs Entreat), is one of the most well-known art songs. Liszt's piano solo arrangement of the piece also remains highly popular today. First published in 1838 without ossias, Liszt's arrangement had triumphed on the piano by 1840, likely due in part to his addition of easier variants, as evidenced by the numerous European editions released during the composer's lifetime. Liszt himself was fond of performing the "Ständchen" as an encore, and even composed small cadenzas for it, which are included in the new Henle Urtext edition. This edition also features English and French translations of the German poem, as well as the placement of the song text above the music, with fingerings provided by Evgeny Kissin.
