Description
As a dedicated admirer of Schubert, Franz Liszt enjoyed performing transcriptions of Schubert’s songs during his piano recitals – and indeed, he did so with such remarkable success that publishers began to take notice. Beginning in 1838, a multitude of these arrangements were published. They rapidly circulated across Europe in various editions and reprints. The six "Müller Songs" released in 1846 are, as stated in the title of the Viennese first edition, "transcribed into a lighter style" and thus provide an excellent introduction to this facet of Liszt’s artistry. In "Wohin?", Liszt adeptly captures the wanderer’s confusion by having the individual melody notes played alternately by the left and right hands. With his fingerings, Evgeny Kissin provides an ideal foundation for the successful interpretation of the musical text created by Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl, based on all available sources.
