Description

Schubert's two piano trios are among his finest works. Both were composed by 1827, just a year before his death, and exemplify his mature style: lush melodies paired with formative power and profound expressiveness. While Schubert sold the E-flat major Trio, Op. 100, D. 929 to the Leipzig publisher Probst (which appeared after Schubert's passing), the B-flat major Trio, Op. 99, D. 898 remained unpublished during his lifetime. The Adagio in E-flat major, Op. posth. 148, D. 897, known as the Notturno, was likely intended as the slow movement of the B-flat Trio. With its emotionally charged descent into dark despair, Schubert may have deemed it unsuitable for publication. This work was not published until 1846. The appendix of this volume includes Schubert's earliest attempt in this genre, composed at age 15 in the summer of 1812.
