Description
Of the twelve composers featured in our "At the Piano" series, Franz Schubert was the least at home on the instrument. Yet, he left us a remarkable collection of masterpieces for piano. Pianists are immediately captivated by the cheerful yet melancholy atmosphere of his Impromptus and Moments Musicaux. Even Schubert's simpler piano pieces hold surprising depth and profundity. His dances, though charming, also convey a wistful, introspective tone - perhaps a reflection of the gravely ill composer's premonition of his own mortality.
