Description

The Scherzo op. 4, written in 1851 when Brahms was not yet 20 years old, served as a calling card that introduced the young composer and pianist to influential musicians. Brahms played the Scherzo for the Schumanns several times in 1853, which may have inspired Robert Schumann's famous article "Neue Bahnen" (New Ways) praising "single piano pieces, some of them turbulent in spirit while graceful in form." This work, previously available only in the HN 38 volume, is now published in a single edition that has been revised to align with the new Brahms Complete Edition and includes new fingerings by Andreas Boyde.
