Description
The piano sonatas of Johannes Brahms, Opp. 1, 2, and 5, were among the first works the 20-year-old composer published. The f-minor Sonata, Op. 5, is closely connected to Brahms's visit to Robert and Clara Schumann in Düsseldorf in 1853, and there are indications that Brahms was inspired by Schumann's Sonata, Op. 14, also in f minor. The music critic Eduard Hanslick believed "the whole of Brahms is here, though still under the spell of Schumann" when writing about Op. 5. This revised Urtext edition is based on the New Brahms Complete Edition and features fingerings by Andreas Boyde that offer the performer ingenious solutions for mastering this symphonic piano work.
