Description

The Piano Sonatas, Opus 1, 2, and 5, were among the earliest published works by the 20-year-old composer Johannes Brahms. Composed in 1852-53, the Sonata in F-sharp minor was the first of the three, completed by November 1852. This work holds a special place in Brahms' oeuvre, with its passionate character described by contemporaries as "serious and dignified." Brahms dedicated this sonata to Clara Schumann, whose husband Robert wrote to the composer that it had brought him "much closer" to Brahms. The acclaimed Brahms expert, pianist Andreas Boyde, has provided the ingenious fingerings for this piece.
