Description
Franz Schubert adapted five melodies from his extensive collection of Lieder into instrumental compositions. The song "The Trout," composed in 1817, served as the thematic foundation for the variations in his Quintet D. 667, which features piano, violin, viola, violoncello, and double bass, and is regarded as one of the most beloved works in chamber music. The piece exudes a bright and cheerful atmosphere, distinctly more uplifting than Schubert's other chamber works, reflecting the joyous summer of 1819. During this period, the twenty-two-year-old Schubert enjoyed the company of friends in Steyr, Upper Austria, before embarking on his compositional endeavors. This Urtext edition primarily adheres to the first Viennese edition, which is believed to closely represent the original version of the now-missing manuscript. Furthermore, it incorporates the sole manuscript source of this work, a copy made by Schubert's acquaintance, Albert Stadler.
