The two Sonatas op. 5 were written by Beethoven in 1796 specifically for a performance with the renowned cellist Jean Louis Duport at the Berlin court. Beethoven's virtuosic piano part ensured he would not be overshadowed by his acclaimed collaborator. The Allegro of the F-major sonata opens with a captivating slow introduction and then dazzles with its abundance of memorable melodies. The subsequent Rondo skillfully blends musical wit and playfulness, contributing to the work's enduring popularity.
