Description

The two Sonatas op. 5, written by Beethoven in 1796, were composed expressly for his performance with the renowned cellist Jean Louis Duport at the Berlin court. Beethoven's virtuosic piano part ensured he would not be overshadowed by his renowned cello counterpart, allowing him to showcase his skills as a pianist. Both sonatas feature a slow introduction preceding two fast movements, with the Sonata in G minor's introduction nearly constituting a movement in its own right at six minutes in length. This Urtext edition by Jens Dufner, based on his research for the Beethoven Complete Edition's Critical Report, presents the musical text at the highest scholarly standard. Dufner's preface and Critical Report outline the sonatas' genesis and source materials. The fingerings are provided by pianists Ian Fountain and David Geringas.
