Description

Beethoven's five cello sonatas are renowned, but the Grande Sonate op. 69, published in 1809, stands out as the centerpiece and most musically significant. From the opening bars, the artful interplay between the cello's rich tenor timbre and the piano's responses creates an almost programmatic quality. Notably, Beethoven forgoes a slow movement in this work, yet compensates with an enchanting Adagio cantabile introduction to the finale. The Urtext edition by Jens Dufner, based on his research for the Beethoven Complete Edition, offers a scholarly musical text informed by a detailed examination of the work's genesis and sources. Renowned cellists Ian Fountain and David Geringas have contributed the fingerings.
