Description
The F-major Sonata op. 54, positioned between the renowned Waldstein op. 53 and Appassionata op. 57, has unfortunately remained in relative obscurity. This sonata, notable for being Beethoven's first substantial two-movement work, showcases his exploration of dramatic contrasts in the initial movement and features a virtuosic perpetuum mobile duet in the second. Consequently, this sonata presents significant challenges in both interpretation and technical execution, which may have contributed to its neglect. Like many of Beethoven's early compositions, this sonata lacks an existing autograph. As a result, Murray Perahia and Norbert Gertsch have relied solely on an original edition for their new publication. Consistent with Henle's approach to new editions of Beethoven's sonatas, Maestro Perahia includes fingerings and offers his insights regarding the significance of this work.
