Description
Following the composition of the three Piano Sonatas, Op. 2, during the years 1794 and 1795, Beethoven likely intended to pursue another trilogy without delay. However, due to its considerable length, the Grande Sonata, Op. 7, was excluded from this new endeavor and published independently. By early 1798, Beethoven had already completed the subsequent set of three sonatas in C minor, F major, and D major, which were published in Vienna that same year as Opus 10. Similar to the Sonata in C minor, Op. 10 No. 1, the Sonata in F major consists of only three movements, marking a departure from the four-movement structure established in Opuses 2 and 7. This change resulted from extensive experimentation with various minuet forms, all of which were ultimately abandoned. Unfortunately, Beethoven's original manuscripts for Opus 10 have not survived, prompting the team of Perahia and Gertsch to rely primarily on the first edition. As is customary, our edition includes comprehensive commentary and verified fingerings by Murray Perahia.
