Description
Schubert's 1828 work Auf dem Strom (On the River), scored for voice, horn, and piano, evokes his earlier composition Hirt auf dem Felsen (Shepherd on the Rock, HN 969), which features an obligato clarinet. Both pieces were written at the request of the horn player Rudolf Lewy. Schubert premiered Auf dem Strom with Lewy and tenor Ludwig Tietze on March 26, 1828 in Vienna, and the performance was so well-received that it was soon repeated, with the press hailing it as an "indescribable treat for the ears." This popular work is now available in a convenient format for singers, including parts for horn in E as well as a transposed version for horn in F.
