Description

Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin," Op. 25, D 795 for High Voice and Piano

The poem cycle "Die schöne Müllerin" was initially crafted by various authors, including Wilhelm Müller, Achim von Arnim, Luise and Wilhelm Hensel, and Ludwig Rellstab.

It was ultimately published in its complete form in 1820 by Wilhelm Müller within the collection titled "Sieben und siebzig Gedichte aus den hinterlassenen Papieren eines reisenden Waldhornisten."

At that time, the cycle comprised 23 poems. Schubert chose to exclude three poems, along with a prologue and epilogue, in his musical interpretation, thus altering the irony and somber conclusion originally intended by the poet. Schubert's arrangement was released in five volumes between February and August of 1824.

The initial lieder in the cycle convey a sense of joy and are characterized by a propulsive energy, which is also evident in the intricate piano accompaniment. In contrast, the latter portion of the song cycle shifts towards themes of resignation, melancholy, and impotent rage, drawing parallels to Schubert's "Winterreise" in its exploration of a yearning for death.

- Renowned song cycle now available for the first time in a standalone edition.

- Foreword by Walther Dürr that examines the history of the work's composition and its sources (in German and English).

- Includes an English translation of the song texts by Richard Wigmore.
