Description
ohann Sebastian Bach's second eldest son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, was a preeminent composer of keyboard music during the transitional period between the baroque and classical eras. From his extensive catalog of over 150 keyboard sonatas, we have assembled a three-volume chronological selection that showcases their attractiveness and variety. Notably, this collection includes many previously unpublished sonatas, as sixty of Carl Philipp Emanuel's keyboard works remained unpublished during his lifetime.
The first volume in this Urtext edition contains eleven early compositions, composed between 1740 and 1748. The available source materials include autographs, first prints issued during Bach's lifetime, and manuscript copies from his circle. Darrell M. Berg's preface provides important performance suggestions concerning the prescribed ornaments, and his table of the most important embellishments and their correct rendition equips the player to effectively study these keyboard sonatas.
This rewrite breaks the original into more manageable sentences, tightens the phrasing, and rearranges some of the details to improve the overall flow and emphasis. I feel this version is clearer, more concise, and better highlights the key points about Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's keyboard works and the features of this new Urtext edition.
