Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major (2 Pianos)

Author : Franz Liszt

Tags : 2 Pianos

Description

Since the 1830s, numerous composers have experimented with hybrid forms combining elements of the symphony, concerto and free fantasia. With his Second Piano Concerto, Liszt succeeded in finding an original solution in that he combined six contrasting sections into a single movement that only roughly follows the scheme of the sonata form. Like the first concerto, the second also underwent a complicated process of composition in several versions with constant refinements until its publication in 1862/63.

Mozart: Concerto No. 20 in D minor K. 466 (2 Pianos)

Author : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Description

Mozart significantly advanced the modern piano concerto form, which began to align with sonata structure around 1750, through his 21 concertos for solo piano and orchestra. Among these, the D minor piano concerto K.466 stands out as one of the few that remained in the concert repertoire after Mozart's death. While other concertos were later revived, K.466 emerged as the most beloved of his works in this category, and it is rare to find a pianist who has not either studied or performed it in concert. The Urtext of the New Mozart Edition offers a full score, performance materials (BA4873), a two-piano reduction (BA4873-90), and a study score format measuring 22.5 x 16.5 cm (TP147), all available for purchase.

Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 20, in D minor, K466 (2 Pianos)

Author : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Description

Mozart composed his Piano Concerto in D minor, K466, for his subscription concerts during the Lenten season of 1785. He noted in his own catalog that the work was finished on February 10, 1785, and premiered the following day. Leopold Mozart, visiting Vienna at the time, referenced the concerto in a letter to his daughter dated February 14, mentioning that a copyist was transcribing the piece upon their arrival, and that Wolfgang had not yet had the opportunity to play through the Rondo due to overseeing the copying process. This Urtext edition of the concerto, which includes orchestral accompaniment arranged for a second piano (requiring two copies for performance), has been edited by esteemed musicologist Christoph Wolff in collaboration with pianist Christian Zacharias. Additionally, it features Beethoven's cadenzas (WoO58), who notably gave the first public performance of the concerto in Vienna, included in the appendix.

Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 27 in Bb major, KV595 (2 Pianos)

Author : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Tags : 2 Pianos

Description

The Concerto in B flat major K. 595 stands as Mozart's final contribution to the significant repertoire of piano and orchestra works, widely celebrated for its maturity and beauty. Completed on January 5, 1791, as recorded in his personal catalog, the circumstances surrounding its performance by Mozart himself remain uncertain. Notably, the Rondo theme from this concerto is echoed in his well-known song “Komm lieber Mai und mache.” This Henle Urtext edition, available in both study score and piano reduction formats, has been meticulously prepared by Mozart expert Wolf-Dieter Seiffert and renowned pianist Piotr Anderszewski, who contributed fingerings, lead-ins, and embellishments to ensure exceptional quality. The cadenzas included are authentic works by Mozart himself, making this the definitive edition of K. 595.

Mozart: Piano Concerto in F, No. 19, K.459 (2 Pianos)

Author : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Description

In 1784, Mozart experienced an extraordinary surge in creativity regarding his piano concertos, composing K.449, 450, 451, and 453 in rapid succession. Following a brief hiatus, he completed K.456 and 459, showcasing his remarkable productivity during this period. Notably, during Lent, he dedicated himself to piano performance, with records indicating he played at least 23 concertos within just 46 days, all while also engaging in composition and teaching. The F major Concerto K.459, crafted in Vienna for his personal use, was likely performed at an Advent concert in December 1784. This concerto, sometimes dubbed Mozart's second Coronation concerto, was notably played during the coronation of Leopold II in Frankfurt am Main in October 1790.
