Description

Though the cheerful E-flat major Piano Sonata by Schubert appears effortless, the composer actually struggled for years to reach its final form. Initial sketches date back to 1817, when the work was still in a three-movement D-flat major version. Schubert likely completed the sonata shortly before his death in 1828, and it was published posthumously the following year.

This lesser-known Schubert piano sonata is an enchantingly lyrical work, achieved through fine shadings, an avoidance of dramatic flourishes (with all movements ending quietly and subdued), and a rocking, flowing triple meter in the outer movements. The Preface by Schubert expert Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl and detailed Comments provide extensive information on the work's genesis and sources. Additionally, the edition features fingering by renowned Schubert interpreter Martin Helmchen.
