Description

Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata, Op. 143 in A minor, was composed in February 1823, following his expansive "Wanderer Fantasy." This sonata marks a significant evolution in Schubert's body of work, characterized by its formal coherence and mature originality. While it eschews superficial virtuosity, it imposes considerable technical challenges on the performer. The sonata's rich tonal palette and sonorous qualities contribute to its status as one of Schubert's most frequently performed pieces. The autograph served as the primary source for Henle's Urtext edition revision, supplemented by a contemporary copyist's manuscript and the first posthumous edition for comparative purposes. In her preface, Schubert scholar Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl outlines the latest research findings, and this new edition also features fingerings by renowned Schubert interpreter Martin Helmchen.
