Description
The B major Sonata, composed by Schubert in August 1817, stands out among his early piano works. Though not published until long after his death, this unusual key choice (for the time period) showcases Schubert's youthful musical experimentation - that same year, he composed other sonatas in D-flat major, A-flat major, and F-sharp minor. Hallmarks of Schubert's style are evident, including surprising modulations and abrupt shifts between lyrical and dramatic passages.
Unfortunately, the autograph score has been lost. This edition, however, is based on Schubert's own sketches and copies from his circle. A preface by Schubert expert Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl and detailed commentary provide valuable insights into the work's origins and sources. Additionally, pianist Martin Helmchen contributes fingering suggestions, further enhancing this comprehensive scholarly publication.
