Description
The definitive 1987 edition of the piano teaching classic Mikrokosmos includes an introduction by the composer's son, Peter Bartók. In 1945, Béla Bartók described Mikrokosmos as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano, written for "didactic" purposes - a series of works in diverse styles representing a "small world" or the "world of the little ones, the children." Stylistically, Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartók's life, and its rhythms and harmonies create a modern sound that has endured since the cycle was written. The 153 pieces are divided into six volumes of increasing technical and musical difficulty. Key teaching points highlighted in Volume 5, Mikrokosmos 5: Chords, together and opposed; studies in double notes; whole-tone scale.
