Description
The enthusiastic reception of Fauré's first Violin Sonata (HN 980) encouraged him to continue writing chamber music. In 1880, he composed a short piece for cello and piano, intending it as a slow movement for a larger sonata. However, Fauré abandoned the sonata project and instead published the piece as a standalone work titled "Élégie." The piece was so successful that the publisher urged Fauré to write more. In 1895, conductor Édouard Colonne commissioned an orchestral version of the "Élégie," which premiered two years later. As with our other Urtext editions, this one contains both a marked and an unmarked solo part.
