Faure: Ballade in F# Major, Op.19 (Piano)

Author : Gabriel Faure

Description

Fauré's piano compositions hold significant importance within his body of work. He dedicated his "Ballade," created in 1879, to his mentor Camille Saint-Saëns. This piece diverges from the traditional epic structure of the genre, adopting characteristics of sonata form while maintaining a lyrical essence. In 1881, Fauré orchestrated the "Ballade," which subsequently premiered in this new arrangement.

Faure: Barcarolles

Author : Gabriel Faure

Description

The latest Peters edition of Fauré's Barcarolles, similar to the edition of the Nocturnes, utilizes a diverse array of sources, including piano rolls performed by the composer and printed versions annotated with his corrections. These rare materials provide alternative textures in the First Barcarolle and offer significant insights into tempo and rhythmic interpretation, particularly in the initial two Barcarolles. The Fifth Barcarolle reveals a crucial manuscript variant and alternative rhythmic notation that significantly influence the piece's tonal and rhythmic framework. In the Eighth Barcarolle, numerous inaccuracies and omissions regarding accidentals have been rectified. The Tenth Barcarolle addresses a persistent confusion between slurs and ties, as well as a continuity issue at a specific juncture. Additionally, the Eleventh and Twelfth Barcarolles benefit from clarifications of frequently debated textures, alongside the correction of a notable number of errors in the Eleventh. The remaining works feature various minor yet impactful corrections, collectively enhancing the clarity of this significant collection of compositions that spans four decades.

Faure: Cello Sonata No. 2, G minor, Op. 117

Author : Gabriel Faure

Description

Composed four years after Fauré's first cello sonata, this second sonata was substantially more catchy and playful. It enjoyed great success with audiences and critics from its premiere in May 1922. As composer Vincent d'Indy wrote to Fauré the day after the premiere, "I would like to tell you how much I am still charmed by your so beautiful sonata. In it I found what is seemingly forgotten these days: music." The sonata rapidly became a staple of the concert repertoire, a position it maintains to this day. Fingerings for the work were provided by the duo of David Geringas and Markus Bellheim.
