Description

Chopin's Scherzo no. 3 is closely connected to his legendary winter stay in Mallorca in 1838/39, as are his Préludes op. 28. On January 22, 1839, the composer sent the autograph of the Préludes to Camille Pleyel in Paris, and simultaneously announced that he would soon "flood" the recipient with further works, including the Scherzo no. 3. The alternation between furious octave passages and a solemn chorale in the Scherzo may have reflected Chopin's mood at the time - a question for performers to consider. This revised Urtext edition, based on the first editions and a manuscript copy, includes detailed footnotes and a condensed Critical Report outlining the many variants in the work's musical text, while a comprehensive Critical Report is available online. This Urtext edition provides a definitive, authoritative version of the score.
