Description

The exquisite Fantaisie by Fauré is a jewel in the chamber music repertoire, for which we can thank his time at the Paris Conservatoire. The flute professor there, Paul Taffanel, had requested a virtuoso examination piece from his colleague. In 1898, Fauré presented Taffanel with the manuscript, explicitly indicating that "unplayable passages" should be modified before using it in the exam. Unfortunately, the autograph score no longer exists, so we do not know what or how much Taffanel may have changed. Nonetheless, the resulting work is a brilliant recital piece. Additionally, our edition includes a short, uncatalogued Adagio that Fauré composed in 1898 as a sight-reading piece for Conservatoire exams.
