Description
Haydn's Sonata in G minor was composed during his tenure as music director at the Esterházy court, specifically between the late 1760s and early 1770s. The exact circumstances surrounding its creation remain unclear, and the available sources are less than ideal, as there are no known autographs or authorized first editions. Consequently, the Urtext edition relies on four contemporary copies of the sonata. Despite these uncertainties, the musical score itself is straightforward, and the two-movement work continues to enjoy significant popularity. The first movement, characterized by its defiant and melancholic tone, transitions into a minuet-like Allegro that concludes on a cheerful note in a major key. The Urtext single edition, based on the Haydn Complete Edition and featuring ergonomic fingering by Claudius Tanski, offers an opportunity to rediscover this remarkable sonata.
