Description
Haydn's C-minor Sonata is imbued with a passionate, dark, and at times sullen mood. It can be seen as the Viennese classicist's own "Appassionata" - a great triumph. Remarkably, its composition stretched over nearly a decade, with the initial sketch dating back to 1771 and the first published edition appearing in 1780. Haydn himself acknowledged the sonata's exceptional nature, describing it as the "longest and most difficult" of the six sonatas dedicated to the piano-playing Auenbrugger sisters. Our reasonably-priced Urtext edition, featuring fingering by Haydn expert Paul Lewis, is based on Henle's comprehensive three-volume Complete Edition of Haydn's piano sonatas.
