Description
The Sextet in B-flat major was acclaimed as “one of the most exquisite compositions by this young composer” following its debut performances in early 1861. It garnered significant admiration from both audiences and critics, maintaining its esteemed reputation to this day. The publisher Simrock was so taken with the piece that he agreed to Brahms’s proposal to publish a full score alongside the individual parts, a practice that was quite uncommon at that time. The various discrepancies between these two initial editions from 1861 continue to pose challenges for researchers of Brahms's work. Brahms expert Katrin Eich has undertaken the responsibility of editing the piece for the Brahms Complete Edition, and this new Urtext edition offers the most accurate musical text for performance. It is, of course, available in both full score and individual parts.
