Description

Brahms's First String Sextet gained significant popularity following its release in 1861. However, when the composer proposed a second work in 1865, described as being "in the same cheerful mood," his publisher Simrock exhibited hesitation. Consequently, Brahms sought out other publishing options, but ultimately, Simrock consented to publish the piece. Initially, critics expressed skepticism regarding this Sextet, Op. 36; however, it received strong approval from Brahms's friends. Clara Schumann commended its sophisticated use of motifs, while others were captivated by its enchanting tonal colors. This practical edition, prepared by Katrin Eich and based on the Brahms Complete Edition, provides performers with the chance to form their own assessments, whether through performance or by examining our study edition. The parts feature player-friendly cue notes and facilitate excellent page turns.
