Description
Schubert's three grand duos for violin and piano stand among his most acclaimed works. In the 1817 A major Sonata D 574, he built upon the simple violin-piano interplay of his earlier violin sonatinas (see HN 6), achieving a new level of mastery. Later, in the 1826 B minor Rondo D 895, Schubert's writing reached genuine virtuosic intensity. Contemporaneous critics praised the "bold master of harmony" and "fiery fantasy" of this piece. Finally, in the 1827 Fantasie in C major D 934, Schubert framed variations on his song "Sei mir gegrüsst" D 741 with tastefully interwoven sections.
