Description

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Sonata in A minor for solo flute serves as a counterpart to the partita composed by his father, Johann Sebastian Bach, in the same key. Composed in 1747 and remaining unpublished until 1763, this work marks the emergence of a new sentimental style, contrasting with his father's piece created approximately thirty years earlier. The edition utilized is derived from the first edition, which is found among the piano works of C. Ph. E. Bach and other composers in the anthology 'Musikalisches Mancherley'. A separate edition published in 1763, which shares the same musical text, has been deemed unnecessary as a source. Additionally, the edition incorporates a late 18th-century copy from the Giedde Collection in Copenhagen, which holds significant importance for flute literature. While this copy appears to originate from the first edition, it also serves as a contemporary correction to certain deficiencies present in the original.

The practical performance notes by Susanne Schrage, a pupil of Kuijken, closely align with the musical text through the flute method of Johann Joachim Quantz, a contemporary of Bach in Berlin. Furthermore, these notes analyze pertinent sections of C. Ph. E. Bach's 'Versuch über die wahre Art, das Clavier zu spielen', offering interpretative insights directly from the composer's viewpoint.
