Description

Haydn likely composed his Symphony No. 88 in G major in 1787, just one year after completing the six "Paris" symphonies. Written alongside its sister work, the F-major Symphony No. 89, the G-major symphony was intended for the violinist Johann Tost, who later sold it to the Parisian publisher Sieber. Continuing the compositional achievements of the Paris symphonies, this work showcases Haydn's mastery of orchestration, richness of musical ideas and details, and his idiosyncratic, multi-hued use of the wind section (even without clarinets). Characterized by a cheerful, almost mischievous inflection - particularly in the catchy rondo finale - this symphony possesses the qualities of an "earworm." This study edition faithfully reproduces the musical text from the Haydn Complete Edition, ensuring the highest scholarly standards. An informative preface and critical report make this a valuable companion for all Haydn devotees, both current and future.
