Description

Haydn composed Symphony No. 89 in F major in 1787, just one year after his six "Paris" symphonies. He wrote it, along with the G-major Symphony No. 88, for the violinist Johann Tost, who later sold it to the Parisian publisher Sieber. These two works continue the compositional achievements of the Paris symphonies, showcasing Haydn's mastery of orchestration, richness of musical ideas, and idiosyncratic use of the wind section (still without clarinets). While the G-major symphony is buoyant, the F-major symphony has a more pastoral, sweet character that can nevertheless soar to dramatic heights. This study edition reproduces the authoritative musical text from the Haydn Complete Edition, accompanied by an informative preface and critical report - making it an ideal companion for Haydn fans, both present and future.
