Description

Haydn's three Symphonies nos. 90–92, commissioned in 1788/89 by the Société Olympique, can be aptly dubbed his "Paris Symphonies Part II." This is because Haydn had already composed his six "Paris Symphonies" nos. 82–87 for the same organization just a few years earlier. Ironically, Haydn later sold these three symphonies a second time to Prince von Oettingen-Wallerstein, who requested "3 new symphonies from him." Despite such mercantile dealings, these works showcase Haydn at the height of his mastery as a symphonist. The autograph manuscript indicates that Symphony No. 90 in C major, completed in 1788, features a festive character with the addition of timpani and trumpets. This study edition, adopting the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, guarantees the highest scholarly quality and includes an informative preface and a brief Critical Report, making it an ideal companion for current and future Haydn fans.
