Description
Haydn arrived in London in early February 1794 for his second stay in England. By then, he had already completed two movements of the Symphony in G major, Hob. I:100, and the finished work premiered on March 31st. The symphony's nickname "Military Symphony" stemmed from the trumpet fanfare in the second movement and its use of "janissary" percussion, which Haydn himself even referenced. The work was an enormous success in London, performed nine times in 1794/95 alone, quickly becoming one of Haydn's most popular symphonies.
