Description

he "London Symphonies" represent the sublime culmination of Haydn's symphonic output. Composed for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, Haydn himself conducted the premieres of these twelve works during his extended stays in the English capital in 1791/92 and 1794/95.

Haydn's Symphony No. 94 in G major, first performed in March 1792, remains one of his most beloved compositions. Its famous "Surprise" nickname refers to the sudden, dramatic chords that interrupt the tranquil Andante movement, catching the audience off guard. Haydn had intentionally incorporated this effect, later embracing the nickname coined by a London musician. The work's popularity quickly spread to German-speaking regions, where it is still frequently performed as the "symphony with the drumbeat."

This study edition adheres to the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, ensuring the highest scholarly standards. An informative preface and concise critical report make this handy score an ideal companion for both seasoned Haydn enthusiasts and new listeners
