Description
The high opus number of this work suggests it was composed late in Schumann's career, but in reality, the twenty individual movements were written 10-15 years earlier, around the same time as his early masterpieces like "Carnaval" op. 8 and the "Romances" op. 28 in the 1830s. However, the work remained unpublished until later in Schumann's life. Following the tremendous success of the "Album for the Youth" op. 68 in 1848, there was renewed demand for Schumann's piano music, prompting him to publish a second collection of works to supplement his income. This gave us a charming set of accessible pieces, of which the "Little Lullaby" (no. 6) has become the most well-known.
