Description

Immediately after completing his Second Violin Sonata, Op. 108, Fauré began work on a sonata for cello and piano in early 1917, realizing a long-held ambition. The two works are closely related in their temperament and character. The cello sonata opens with a somber, dramatic first movement, followed by a calm, relaxed slow movement and a graceful finale. While the initial public response was muted, the work has since been rediscovered as a substantial part of Fauré's late chamber output, thanks to growing interest in this repertoire. The Henle Urtext edition represents the first critical edition of this sonata, with expressive markings provided by the renowned cellist David Geringas.
