Description
Fauré's 1875/76 violin sonata opened a new tradition for the genre in French music. In a review, his friend and pupil Saint-Saëns praised the work, calling it a "gourmet's delight" of "new forms, excellent modulations, unusual tone colors, and unexpected rhythms." Saint-Saëns marveled that "a magic floats above everything, encompassing the whole work, causing even the most jaded listeners to accept its daring as something quite normal." With this sonata, Fauré had "taken his place amongst the masters."
