Description

Schubert's friends gathered around him as he played the piano, his inexhaustible wealth of dance melodies filling the air. This lively scene, with dancing and playful jokes, is one of the cherished traditional images of Schubert. The term "Schubertiade" was coined to describe these intimate musical gatherings, and it has now become firmly established.

This volume contains over 200 dances, minuets, waltzes (including the famous 34 Valses sentimentales op. 50 and the 12 Valses nobles op. 77), ländler, écossaises, and German dances - each more delightful than the last. These pieces were composed between 1816 and 1826. In the Appendix, there are an additional 32 dances, some of which only have the melodies transmitted, while others were likely intended for different scorings (see Vol. I, HN 74).
