Description

1. Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) is often regarded as the foremost cello virtuoso of his era, drawing comparisons to the renowned violinist Paganini during his lifetime. He taught at prestigious institutions, including the Conservatoire de Paris. Among his notable works is the Trio in E minor, which serves as the first piece in the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle, Viola et Violoncelle, Op. 38. This composition features a solo cello accompanied by a viola and a second cello, while the remaining trios in the collection present greater technical challenges, incorporating intricate passage work and various clefs.

2. The Trio in E minor, Op. 38/1, has been frequently arranged for different instrument combinations, with one of the most popular adaptations being for cello and piano by Friedrich Gustav Jansen (1837-1910), making it suitable for both lessons and performances. Additionally, an arrangement for three cellos (SE 1008) is available, allowing a student to play the straightforward bass part. This edition is part of the new Schott Student Edition series, which provides a diverse selection of literature across five levels of difficulty, catering to instrumental learners.
