Description
The Sonata in E minor was initially the first piece in Trois Trios d’une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle, Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. This composition features a solo cello accompanied by a viola and a second cello, while the other two trios in Op. 38 present greater challenges, incorporating extensive passage work, thumb position, and both tenor and violin clefs. Unlike the high level of virtuosity required in Romberg's cello concertos, the solo part here primarily utilizes neck positions, creating a harmonious mix of lyrical melodies and accessible passages. This edition, arranged for three cellos, is particularly suitable for cello instruction, allowing a less experienced student to play the easy bass part, while the second part can be performed by the teacher or a more advanced student. Additionally, the well-known arrangement of the Trio for Violoncello and Piano by Friedrich Gustav Jansen is also available.
