Description

In the spring of 1804, Beethoven premiered two new works in private performances for Prince Lobkowitz, a patron of the arts: his Third Symphony, Op. 55, and the Triple Concerto, Op. 56, for piano, violin, cello, and orchestra. This allowed Lobkowitz to appraise Beethoven's freshly composed pieces, enabling the composer to make improvements before publication.

The first public performance of the Triple Concerto did not occur until four years later, in February 1808, at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. Since then, this work has become a standard part of symphony orchestra repertoires.

This Urtext piano reduction is based on the score from the Beethoven Complete Edition, also prepared by Bernard van der Linde. The editor's preface provides detailed information about the complicated source material for this concerto featuring three soloists.
