Description
In the spring of 1804, two private performances were held for Prince Lobkowitz, during which Beethoven's two new works were presented for the first time: the Third Symphony op. 55 and the Triple Concerto op. 56, featuring piano, violin, cello, and orchestra. The art-loving patron Lobkowitz had the opportunity to evaluate these newly composed pieces, allowing Beethoven to implement numerous enhancements prior to their publication.
The first public performance of the Triple Concerto likely occurred four years later, in February 1808, at Leipzig’s Gewandhaus. Since that time, this composition has become a staple in the repertoire of every symphony orchestra. The piano reduction of this Urtext edition is derived from the score of the Beethoven Complete Edition, which was also prepared by Bernard van der Linde. The editor’s preface offers comprehensive insights into the intricate source situation surrounding this concerto for three soloists.
