Sarasate: Caprice Basque, Op 24 (Violin/Piano)

Author : Pablo de Sarasate

Description

Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) is recognized as one of the foremost violin virtuosos of the latter half of the 19th century, achieving lasting fame through his technically demanding and emotionally charged compositions. His concert repertoire primarily featured his own works, although he also performed pieces specifically composed for him by contemporaries, such as Lalo's 'Symphonie espagnole', Bruch's 'Scottish Fantasia', and various violin compositions by Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski. In his 'Caprice Basque' (Capricho vasco) Op. 24, Sarasate incorporated elements of Spanish folk music, dedicating the piece to Otto Goldschmidt, a composer and pianist who studied under Mendelssohn. This composition showcases the distinctive dotted rhythm of the 'zortzico', a lively Basque dance in 5/8 time, making it a vibrant and exhilarating work for skilled performers.

Sarasate: Carmen-Fantasie, Op 25

Author : Pablo de Sarasate

Description

The 19th century was a golden age for musical arrangements of all kinds, so it was natural that the composer and violin virtuoso Sarasate would turn to this genre to expand his repertoire. He composed numerous fantasies based on popular operas of the time, but his Carmen Fantasy undoubtedly stands as his crowning achievement in this form. Composed in 1881, this work deliberately highlights the Spanish atmosphere of Bizet's opera through its skillful selection of memorable melodies. Sarasate created versions for both violin and piano, as well as violin with orchestral accompaniment, both of which have since delighted audiences and critics alike. This Henle Urtext edition represents the first-ever critical edition of the work, drawing upon the sources for both instrumental versions. The solo violin part has been meticulously annotated by acclaimed violinist Augustin Hadelich.

Sarasate: Introduction & Tarentelle, Op. 43

Author : Pablo de Sarasate

Description

Sarasate's compositions are dominated by elements of Spanish folklore, but he also incorporated typical melodies and dances from other countries in several prominent works. Among the most popular representatives of this group are the "Zigeunerweisen" and the "Introduction et Tarantelle," with the latter serving as Sarasate's enduring monument to the fiery southern Italian tarantella dance. Sarasote first composed the violin and piano version in 1899, followed by the violin and orchestra version a year later. For this Urtext edition, all preserved autograph sources were consulted. Violinist Augustin Hadelich undertook the marking of the virtuosic violin part for G. Henle Publishers.

Sarasate: Romanza Andaluza (Spanish Dance No.3) op. 22 no. 1 for Violin

Author : Pablo de Sarasate

Description

Sarasate, the renowned composer and violin virtuoso, composed his Spanish Dances (HN 1370) by blending existing folk songs and works by established composers with his own captivating musical style. The two dances in Op. 22, "Romanza andaluza" and "Jota Navarra," were completed in 1878 during Sarasate's first concert tour of Scandinavia. While both pieces displayed his virtuosity, the lyrical "Romanza" quickly surpassed the brilliance of its companion work in popularity, becoming one of Sarasate's most frequently performed compositions. This enduringly charming piece is now available as a standalone edition in the Henle catalogue.

Sarasate: Spanish Dances for Violin & Piano

Author : Pablo de Sarasate

Description

Just like many other violin virtuosos of the 19th century, Pablo de Sarasate composed a series of highly virtuosic salon pieces for violin and piano (or orchestra) that he performed in concerts. These works drew inspiration from national folk music traditions across Europe, alternating between fiery passion and yearning expressiveness. Sarasate published his eight Spanish Dances in four books between 1878 and 1882, and they are considered among his most successful compositions. In these pieces, Sarasate masterfully blended Spanish folk tunes with arrangements of popular compositions of the time. As with the Henle Urtext edition of Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen (HN 573), the fingerings and bowings for this music have been provided by the contemporary violin virtuoso, Ingolf Turban.
